Red sindoor / kum kum is being applied by indian married women since vedic era in their hair parting as red colour is supposed to be the color of power and energy of parvati and sati traditionally.
Durga maa sindoor sindoor is the purest form of sindur extracted from the flowers of sindur.
The red coloured powder extracted from this flower is mixed with mercury to form the of sindur used in religious activities.
This sindur is mainly used in worshipping lord vaishno devi and all 9 devis.
We see in almost all vaishno mata temples.
